I've heard many people say that in Islam women are viewed as sex objects and their role is to fullfil mans desire, this is why they (apparently) cover themselves. Wouldnt be more correct to say that in western society, women are viewed as sex objects?

Billboards, adevertisements, entertainment, fashion etc are all it takes to realise this.

Please reply is a mature and sensible manner. I dont mean to offend anyone, just stating my opinion. Thanks.

Please stick to the subject, im not trying to prove Islam is correct, so people can stop saying all the bad things they think they know about it. Im just asking about how women are portrayed in western society.

This a question that probably won't be resolved. If a woman decides to cover her body that is her choice. Surprisingly this appears to upset more people than if a woman uncovers her body. Women are only exploited if that is what they choose and the same can be said of men. Any woman is desirable, in many ways, whether clothed or not. However, are men not more enticed by their imaginations in the long term by a woman who feels and shows respect for herself. Men and women are both sexual. Clothes really have little to do with it. They are protective i.e warmth, tradition, fashion. Whatever you wear whether it be a hairstyle or a piece of jewellery, people will judge by their limited experience on what they believe you are.

Well, I do sometimes wonder why Muslim women cover themselves up in front of men, I mean, to me that's like going around carrying a placard saying "Don't look at me!" and if I did that, people would look at me, so it seems to me as though these women WANT to be looked at (and by extension, lusted over), but then I hear these religious spokesmen (always men) saying Western, non-Muslim culture is the culture that makes women into objects to be lusted over, and to be frank, mate, I find it all a bit confusing.

Hello Stranger,

perhaps read Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia (Paperback)Jean P. Sasson Go to Amazon and read the reviews (if you want to lol) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/0967673747/ref=cm_cr_dp_pt/002-2289782-5084833?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books

Stranger as you have said we are viewd very often as sex objects in this western society, and it's starting very young which worries me. Children dressing in womens clothes, women going out dressed in a manner which leaves nothing to the i imagination. Covering up with choice is ok. I hate this constant push for everyone to be certain sizes and looks. I think it's damaging peoples mental health.

The reason why muslim women cover themselves is to be respected, to show modesty and demand NOT to be treated as sex objects. They demand that men talk to their brains not their body.

Men, when you look at a woman, especially a hot woman, where do your eyes land? And what would your thoughts be? Come on, lets be honest here.

In elevating the status of women from being treated as mere sex objects, not only are muslim women covering themselves, but it is also a MUST for muslim men to lower their gaze when talking to women. This is out of respect.

Just that this requirement is not that apparent to that of a muslim woman covering herself. In addition, a muslim man also has 'aurat', body parts which MUST be covered and hidden except from his wife, and that is, from his stomach to his knees.

Therefore, if you say that Islam is sexist, its only because you are ignorant. Please go to a proper class and learn.

Western society and objectification of women: legalization of porn, strip clubs, value of a woman based primarily on her appearance........how else would you explain the booming industry of cosmetic surgery? etc...........

The reason why women are viewed as sex objects is because of lust. Lust is not confined to any specific religion. Lust is within man and it is one of the thinsg which takes out the truth, goodness and purity out of the things in the world.

Conquer Lust. In order to do so man must stop identifying with the body. You exist as somethinbg that is different from the body. In fact you exist as something that is bryind even the mind.

I don;t think that sexualised images of women on advertisements constitutes viewing women as sex objects, there's more to it than that. A sex object implies that sex is ALL that women are important for and that personlity and skills don't matter. Thus I think that although there is less overt sex objectification in Islam, in fact it is worse, because women's personal expression is inhibited.

Women are sweet, beautiful and cunning human beings, so whatever you might want to percieve them, I think they play a significant role in our society. For, from woman comes man and through woman, man is nurtured, so women deserve our respect for maintaining their perseverence throughout their lifetime.
Whatever they do, be it in pornogrphy, modeling, in workplaces, or in entertainment; I think like everyone else, they are seeking a way to survive financially. It is only those who ogle at women who view them as sex objects otherwise we value their place in society more so being man's greatest friend.

They are viewed as too tempting to be seen by adult males. If a man and woman are in a room alone, they are automatically assumed to have had sex. If western people are in a room together we can assume that they have self control. Which woman is an "object'?

Well very intresting question.Personally myself i used to be muslim. However i am not anymore.Women cover themself to hide there beauty that God has given them, especially if they are married they only show there beauty to there husband. So that the other men dont look at them and whistle which usually happens. But yes it might be right to say if a women walks down the road with a skirt up to her *** on yes she prob would be viewed as a sex object!Yes and with the amount of porno we have over here it just makes people lean that way to be like them.theres your answer!
