Once you’ve had a yeast infection, you’ll probably never want it again. Unfortunately, yeast infections do tend to recur. To help lower your chances of experiencing another yeast infection, or to prevent getting one in the first place, here are some things you can do:
Consider taking a daily supplement designed to help prevent the recurrence of a yeast infection
Keep you vaginal area clean, being sure to wash the area when you shower
After a shower or bath, make sure your vaginal area is completely dry before getting dressed
Wear cotton underpants and pantyhose with a cotton crotch
After using the toilet, always wipe from front to back
Avoid sharing towels and washcloths
Wash your under garments in hot water and skip the fabric softener in the dryer
Avoid clothing that is tight in the crotch
Always change out of your exercise clothes or swimsuit immediately after working out or swimming
Change your sanitary pads or tampons frequently and avoid using ones that are scented
Avoid using heavily scented soaps, perfumes and talcum powder
Avoid douching
Use antibiotics only when necessary
Eat a diet high in vegetables, protein and grains as well as consuming yogurt that has live acidophilus bacteria; avoid processed foods, sugars and alcohol
Always use a water soluble lubricating gel during sex
Consider using a condom if you are having sex and have a yeast infection
Make sure you vagina is well lubricated during sex; avoid sex if it feels painful
If you are experiencing chronic yeast infections and are using hormonal contraceptives, like the birth control pill, consider changing your birth control method !

There are lots of things in your vagina that balance each other out. There are good bacteria that balance out the yeast cells, for example. (Isn't biology gross! Anyway...) If something causes the good bacteria to go away, the yeast grows out of control, which causes the yeast infection. There are pills, creams, and suppositories you can buy at the pharmacy to cure a yeast infection, BUT if you've never been actually diagnosed by a doctor, make sure you see a doctor FIRST. There are other things that mimic the symptoms of a yeast infection, that you could actually make WORSE by taking yeast infection medication.

If you are 100% positive you have a yeast infection (because you've had them before and you were diagnosed before by a doctor) then you can try the over-the-counter stuff, or even a home remedy (yogurt). If you aren't 100% positive, go to the doctor first to get diagnosed.

I'm assuming you mean vaginal? Normally you have a certain number of yeasts (fungus) and bacteria that keep the vagina clean and free from infection, like you have 'good' bacteria in your intestines. Usually they keep each other in check and you have a healthy balance of the bacteria and yeast. Sounds gross but it's healthy and normal.

Certain things can throw one or the other out of balance. In the case of yeasts, the main culprits are antibiotics (which kill the good bacteria), the pill, too much sugar in the diet (and too little water), high yeast diets (e.g bread), a lot of alcohol (also high in sugars) and tight underwear or underwear made from non-natural fibres which make you sweat. Also, washing the area with harsh soaps can upset the natural balance.

Don't worry- yeast infections are reasonably common. It's not that the woman is dirty etc.

Make sure you have a good diagnosis because throughout the month your body can give a great impression of one.

You can get good antifungal creams specifically for this as well as tablets. Talk to a pharmacist.

Wear loose cotton underwear (or none when you can get away with it!) to allow your skin to 'breathe', cut down sugar, bread and alcohol for a while and drink more water.

Try a less harsh soap alternative.

If you have had antibiotics in particular, (but is a good idea even if not) eat natural yoghurt that has high levels of acidophilus and bifidus bacteria or yoghurt drinks, powders or tablets with these in them to replace the good bacteria you have lost and need for good digestion. Make sure they are refridgerated to keep the bacteria alive and there is no fruit or flavour added as these kill the bacteria.

Hope this helps

Hello, I'm on the second week and seeing definite improvement on my yeast infection symptoms:

Note that: If the yeast infection doesn't respond to over the counter treatment, prescription medication will likely be necessary. Similarly, if the symptoms return after two months of being treated, you should contact the doctor for professional treatment rather than resorting again to home treatment.

If this is the first time you have experienced a yeast infection, you should schedule an appointment to have the condition treated by a doctor instead of resorting to home treatment
