Look inside the Spout and you see this sensor. When you turn on the Gas to fill the sensor sticks out and when the tank fill to the sensor it kicks off the gas. The spring around the nozzle just help hold it in place so you not have too. The sensor is inside the nozzle, just look without turning on the gas.

A sensor on the part of the pump that goes in your tank. When gas reaches it, it automatically shuts off. It's a safety feature.

You know the coil on the thing that goes into your gas tank? It senses when gas gets to it.

there is a overflow prevention sensor on the gas pump nozzle.....I beleive the coils wrapped around the nozzle is a part of that.

it doesn't-you push the handle to make the gas flow and release it to stop the gas.
