The feasibility of using GaAs laser diodes to measure range for submunitions is investigated. The ability to measure range and perform target profiling increases the performance of submunition sensors by improving the probability of detection and reducing the probability of false alarms. GaAs laser diodes meet the packaging, environmental, and performance constraints placed on laser rangers for submunition applications. A proof-of-principle device has been built and demonstrated
