Sure. You can play fingerstyle, using your thumb to play bass, or with fingerpicks that fit on the end of your fingers. Classical guitarists use their fingernails.
I knew a guy that used a pick AND his fingers, and was very good.
If you bought it recently, be advised that nothing about guitar playing is easy at first. Play pieces very, very slowly, so that you practice correctly, because if you practice mistakes, you get nowhere! Practice a measure, get it right, practice the next one, then connect them. Give the pick a chance, do it real slow, so it is easy. Play slow, but keep the time even, and slowly speed it up, keeping it even, not one part fast and the other slow. Okay?

No, you don't have to. There's more than just one way to play the strings of a guitar. But, since you recently bought a guitar, try to learn with the pick anyways. Guitar is one of the hardest things to learn at first. You just have to get used to it. I remember when I first started and I was frustrated wiith just about everything. But now, it's a breeze and you just keep learning new things.

A pick is an essential tool for a guitarist, but there are certian songs a styles which can (or have to) be played by plucking.

Ultimatley you'll find that a pick is far more efficent/easy and plucking can be quite painful on the fingers.

Guitar Hero and playing the guitar are not even close to being the same thing at all. I am on expert level on guitar hero and have beat all three games on expert and still am learning the basics on the guitar. Also, I found the electric was easier to play than the acoustic, so not everyone is the same.

i had a hard time playing with a pick at first too. it kept slipping out of my fingers so i git these other kind that have like rising dots on them. that sounds weird, but it helps you grip the thing better. you can finger pick too, and a lot of acousti players do that. but if you use a pick it gives you a faster, louder and stronger sound. it takes some getting used to.

Depends on what kind of guitar you have and what kind of music you want to play. Sometimes you need a pick...

No you do not have to. As was previously mentioned, there are a number of fingerpicking styles.
However, it takes time getting used to anything new so, continue to practice with the pick -- it will come to you. Good luck!

Yes, you can use the pads of your fingers to strum. YOu will develop calluses on them, and it may be painful for a while.
