Generally it was a derogatory name given to members of the "northern oppression" during the US civil war. Since then it's been held proudly as the name for a member of the northern states of the US, as well as a NY baseball team.
In foreign countries they call all Americans Yankees since they don't know the difference.
Although I'd never heard that before, I like your definition.

In horse racing gambling, a Yankee bet is on 4 horses, to win or 'each way' (lesser payout for finishing in the top three). It covers 2 or 3 or all 4 horses where the winnings from the first are placed on the next.
Complex to work out but, boy, can it pay out!

Aussie's call all of us "Yanks." But the term usually refers to Americans who live in the northeastern part of the USA. It also refers to a cuisine, Yankee Pot Roast, to name one item!
