I've seen horses poop while walking with a person on it's back. But if a horse is in a field without a person on him, will he stand still, squat down to poop?

they cant squat down, there joints and muscles cant work that way, they always stand

other random fact most horses will sleep standing cause they cant lay down for long periods of time or there organs could squash there lungs.

No, horses will poop while standing up. They do not squat, however, some trick riders can and do teach their horses to sit like a dog or bow for a trick. This is not the majority of horses, and these horses have to be conditioned to do so. While riding, it is often looked upon (especially trained horse for showing) as negative for a horse to stop to do his business. They are trained to go while moving.

NO horses always stand up and poop if they were to squat down and poop it would get all over them. Then the area would get infected because it's dirty. That would be one hell of a mess to clean up.

I'm a squatter. I get constipated a lot and I tried squatting and it helped me pass hard stools and took a lesser amount of time than sitting would usually take. When I used to sit it would be hard to get my poo out so I had to dig it out sometimes. Squatting changed the way I poop.

Horses' hind legs do not bend in a direction that allows them to poop squatting

nope, they just let it out. Some may stop and raise their tails. I usually try to set up in the saddle when they do to take pressure off of their kidneys while they poop. Some horses don't care and will just poop as they plod along.

Take Care

LOL, no horses don't squat when they poop, they either keep moving or stand. The sort of squat when they pee though.

No squat. What you saw with a rider on the horse's back is pretty much how it is with horses -- rider or no rider -- although standing still is common, as well.

Horses' knees don't bent enough for them to squat down.

Even if they did bent enough, they would not squat down. They will discharge bodily wastes while standing up...like cows.

Cows can actually sit, but when they are discharging wastes, they are standing.
