The pilot light is on but the fireplace will not start.

usually you just slide it up and out or in. look for clips or set screws holding it tight. HOWEVER if you can't get to the thermocouple maybe you shouldn't be changing out gas fittings. No offence but if you don't know what your doing you could blow the whole place up. What ever you do , make sure the gas supply line is closed off . If you are not sure if something is safe STOP Don't do it. I work on a natural gas drilling rig. We have a saying.. if you are not sure if its lever "A" or lever "B" LEAVE HER BE . Good luck.

if the pilot is lit
maybe the gas valve that the thermocouple is going to isn't in the correct position.
