I wanted some specific medical information on the net, and noticed a lot of the competition charges for their content. Why would I pay for something I could get for free?

Some people can't be bothered to search for stuff online themselves. (That's about half the stuff here on Yahoo Answers) They want someone else to do the dirty work. It's a convenience thing just to go to one website to find the info.
Those that can do, those that can't pay someone else to do it.

I think you can also make your own web site. Microsoft (free domain and hosting for life) , Google (Googlepages, Blogger) , Yahoo (Geocities), Freewebs are some of the companies offering free websites with design tools .
