Depends on what system specs you currently have. I suggest figuring out your system specs now by using a program called:

Aida 32 or Everest: (Free System information tool)
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/windows/2005/11/07/remove-saved-passwords-in-xp-2/

Then compare the specs to the motherboard, cpu and ram that you want to purchase and go from there.

Hope this helps.

All that stuff will make it perform much more quickly and will allow you to do more stuff. The hard drive is just a storage area. Remember, however, that the storage area is used all the time to store stuff momentarily, so if it's cluttered and has little space left, you'll experience performance problems.

Frankly, the money you're talking about - $90 here, $100 there - will buy a brand new computer. You already have a monitor, mouse and keyboard. You can salvage the CD drive and the floppy drive...something to think about.

Good luck! - Stuart

FIRST, I would get the Live CD of Linux, and run it, as it runs upto 50X faster, and is FREE!!! And has tons of games, 1900 programs, and, can be a second Operating System, on the same hard drive, or on a different one! It likes 6 Gb of space for the full install of 5500 games and programs from the free repository web storage server.

Then, if you decide to upgrade the other parts, did you consider that the OLD POWER SUPPLY might be worn and tired?

I usually change out that, also...

But, I am running PII 350 Mhz systems, with 256 Mb RAM, up to 1.1Ghz with 768Mb RAM, and all are faster than the broadband can serve them!

I like the cheap stuff, and recycle tons of systems each year to poor kids and schools that can't get computers into the budgets.

They love Linux, as does Microsoft, who runs 45,000 Linux systems for Microsoft.com, hotmail.com and MSN.com.

That might help if you system is very old. Mostly more RAM 512Mb min, and a new HD and reinstalling Windows (if it's Windows) will likely make your existing machine run like a champ.
