Which brand is best? Should I go desktop or laptop? I've never owned my own computer. I'll just use it for e-mailing, IMing, and research.

Well whatever you do, DO NOT get a Compaq computer because they suck! Notice how no one here mentioned getting a Compaq? There's a reason for that. I wouldn't get an eMachine computer either, they're just generic and for about $100 more you can get an HP, which comes with lots of great extras. My boyfriend bought me an HP computer two years ago for Christmas and I love it. It was only around $600.
Do you do alot of traveling? If you do, I would invest in a laptop, but make sure it comes with a wireless card so you can get internet anywhere you go. Laptops CAN be kind of hard to get used to though because the keys are very different and I never could seem to get used to using that little pad you use your finger for as a mouse. I'd get a regular laptop mouse that plugs into the laptop if you do get one.

HP or Gateway, but I like HP : )

DUDE go to walmart and get the cheapest one they have. You can get one with a flat screen for like 500 bucks...you dont need an expensive laptop or a more expensive computer, it will be obsolete in two years anyway
