Perhaps, but it is the best theory yet that seems to fit the evidence we have. We think we can detect the glow of the big bang in radiation that you can see on your television when there is no signal being broadcast on that channel.

Let us answer the last part of the question first: yes or no, depending on what you believe we are to divert to. We 'are' or 'are not' diverting from more illuminating phenomena as well as illusions and realities if you consider that here in the physical universe, the balance of illusion and reality are essential.

And now for the first part of the question: No, a red herring it is not.

Dialectically, diversion is no less an importance than focused intrepidation; it is an essential quantity and quality both towards ascension on any given matter or objective.

Astronomically, no again, the Big Bang was! 'A reality.

The Big Bang is the dominant cosmological theory because it best fits the observational data. So how could it be a red herring? You need to know the observed data before your suggestions will be taken seriously.
