Why are ppl phony?

I can never understand why someone who you meet for the first time pretends to be someone they are not (i e Caring, thoughful, understanding) and turns out to be a real B***H. True colours come out sooner than later, so why not just be yourself rather than lie?

All people are basically afraid. People do what is acceptable so that they will be accepted. When this facade breaks down, the true person emerges. All of us are phonies to some degree.
