Signal harnesses are so bulky and fragile and restrictive to proper air flow.

USB is too slow, simple as that.

SATA is very popular for HDD's now, and can handle the speeds we require for efficient data transfer. You can also find SATA on some optical drives, however this increases the price a lot which doesnt make them very popular.

In the meantime, some creative wire management will help your airflow tremendously. Replace your traditional IDE cables with rounded IDE cables.

They will come out with drives that use SATA isntead of IDE cabling for CD/DVD/BLUE RAY drives. It's all moneymaking as far as I am concerned. and I suppose it takes time to get it passed for regulations and all, meh I'm not 100% sure. But it's a good point, IDE cables restrict air flow and causes more heat than necessary. As for drives with USB, they do have external drives with USB as you probably already know, but l ike I said, I firmly believe that SATA cabling will be the next big thing in drive connectivity.

Remember the first car audio CD player? They had discmans for the longest time, and mp3's were popular during that period, it was only a matter of a couple years before it started integrating into discmans. Its all moneymaking, I want car audio decks to be able to play DVD discs with mp3's on em. (might lose money that way though, that's what I think)

Because USB connection would be slow (er) for transferring data. There are external HD's and optical readers (USB / FireWire) but they are slower still.
