Some clothes could still have fresh stains on them, which may result to black spots after washing. Use Tide To Go sample, so you can just wipe fresh stains off your clothes and never worry about them later. Visit this site http://www.upkb.com/tidetogo.php for product details and cleaning guides.

It can only be either rust or paint flakes from the tub or the drum bearing and seal are starting to disintegrate. The latter being likely as the bearing gets noisy with excessive wear. There are no gears in a washing machine. If you lift the front of the drum up and down by hand any perceptible movement means the bearing is shot. You can buy kits to replace the seal and bearing if you are DIY capable. Other than that, get a man in or replace the machine. Indesit are the best value.

Hi,
Along with all the good answers above, I found that when I ran my fairly new washing machine, after it sat for a long while of non use, was that old soap scum or what ever was being "shed", into the drum.
The machine was not smelly or any thing like that, it had just totally dried out in the drum.
After a few runs with just hot water and bleach, this stopped happening.
Hope this helps, Dave

Something metal (e.g. coin, hairclip, press stud) could have gotten into the drum and is rusting. Sadly, there's no way to get it out yourself. You can possibly avoid it by taking your washing out of the machine as soon as it has finished so the washing isn't sitting for too long.

If your washing machine is getting on the old side then i suspect that the drum may be corroding. This would mean that there is rust inside of your drum, buy a new one.

Hot water setting, largest cycle, 2-3 gallons of white vinegar, no clothes, and double rinse if you have that option. If that still doesn't work, it might be what everyone said about corrosion.

How do I know this? You have no idea how many pens and lipsticks have gone through my dryer!

I suspect it was at one point a ball point pen that was washed in a previous load of laundry... However the ink has remained in the inside of the drum.... Thats what happened to me last time.
