Hi there,

Unless you cannot afford to pay for a security solution, I would avoid free programs such as AVG, Spybot and Adaware. There used to be great programs a couple of years ago, but using these three programs combined protects you from less than 60% of the threats out there today.

Looking at the latest mainstream protection scores it's currently Kaspersky that comes out on top (although seems to generate a high number of false positives), ahead of McAfee and then Norton. However, these scores are all currently dwarfed by another program called Prevx1. This is an all-in-one-solution that protects against all forms of infection (virii, spyware, adware, trojans, rootkits, etc), and has proven to have the strongest protection and clean-up capabilities of all security products available today.

Besides being inherently stronger than conventional security products, Prevx1 also protects against new malware threats that most popular security products do not. Regular security products have to find a new piece of malware, test it in the laboratory, before creating a signature and making it available for their product to download to your PC. This often takes several days. During this time, your PC is not protected. Prevx1 however, defends your PC from new malware immediately, even without signatures.

This alone is what makes Prevx1 currently the best security solution you can get.

Dont download a lot of programs because most contain spyware in them.

Ad-Aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Ewido AntiMalware
Windows Defender Beta 2

These are the only known safe ones. Superantispyware seems safe but its not proven. I learned this the hard way when I installed a bunch of software and got a bunch of trojans. Only use the ones above. Another person mentioned HiJackThis which is a great program but it is for an advanced user. Dont download this unless Adaware and the rest fail to remove something. Good luck!

the best combination for safe computer is to have antivirus with real-time protection + anti spyware. it doesn't matter which programs you choose, but both programs should be compatible with each other. and also, don't get misleaded by corrupt antimalware programs, cos they will do much more harm.

Install Spybot Search and Destroy. Install it, then look for updates, then immunize, then run a scan. It will clean up a lot of spyware.
