I have trouble with the words "reputable" and "headhunter" in the same sentence. There are good and bad ones out there.
In 25 years of talking with them, whether employed or not, I have never gotten a position using a headhunter. The best I ever did on a position was to get interviews, which for whatever reason, I did not get an offer. I have done better on my own through on-line and newspaper searches. And I am in upper management.
I understand they are busy and have to juggle candidates and jobs, but when they make promises they don't keep or just plain don't return your call, a lot of them need to learn basic office etiquette. Hire a person just to call back with a yes or no. I had to threaten a headhunter with legal action once for a promise of "all interview expenses paid by the company" that he stated was not true. Luckily I had the ONE e-mail from him that stated this and the headhunters company had to pay.
With that said, remember - it's the companies that pay their bills, not the candidates. You are just another commodity to be sold.
If the company is looking for chicken soup and you are split pea, you will sit on the shelf until found by the split pea buyer.
Good Luck!
