My beater z-24 started doing this. I just unplugged the torque converter on the front of the tranny. Not a GM approved repair but it didn't cost me a dime either. My mileage dropped about 4 miles per gallon. Driving like that for over 3 years too.

the 92 has a lock up converter, this is stating locked. You can unplug the 4 prong environmental plug on the front of the transmission and see if this solves the problem, the "check Engine" light will stay on, but the car will stop stalling. If it is a switch or solenoid problem it can be repaired without pulling the trans. However if the problem is the converter then the tranny has to come out, either way you need to see a transmission shop.
