5/8 = 0.625

3/4 = 0.75

9/16 = 0.5625

7/8 = 0.875

Therefore the one with a diameter of 9/16 inches is the smallest

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alternatively

Find a common denominator for all the fractions:

5/8, 3/4, 9/16, 7/8

10, 12, 9, 14
----------------
16

The first is got by 16/8 X 5 = 10
The second by 16/4 X 3 = 12
The third by 16/16 X 9 = 9
The fourth by 16/8 X 7 = 14

Therefore the one with a diameter of 9/16 inches is the smallest

The four diameters in order of size, starting with the smallest first are as follows:-

9/16
5/8 (multiplied by 2 = 10/16)
3/4 (multiplied by 4 = 12/16)
7/8 (multiplied by 2 = 14/16)

I find it easiest to convert all the denominators into equal numbers, that way it is much easier to tell which is the largest fraction.

Hope this helps.

a lot of people find dealing with decimals easiest. if you're allowed to use a calculator, so much the better for this! 5/8 = 0.625, 3/4 = 0.75, 9/16 = 0.5625, and 7/8 = 0.875, the largest number is 0.875 so 7/8 is the largest fraction there.

If you can't use a calculator, try and think about a cake. Think about it being cut into equal slices, however many that is on the bottom of the fraction, and that however many is on the top of the fraction is left (the rest have been eaten!), draw it!

alternatively, just think about whichever number on the top of the fraction is closest to the number on the bottom of the fraction. 7 is closer to 8 than 5 is to 8, so 7/8 is bigger than 5/8. But remember that the bigger the number on the bottom, the smaller the slice of cake! so for instance 15/16 is bigger than 7/8!

hope this is some help!

you need to get a common denominator (botom number) so that you can compare the numberator (top number)

I would convert them all to a denominator of 16

you would have to multiply 8 X2 to get 16 and what you do to the bottom you must do to the top

5/8 X 2/2 = 10/16
7/8X 2/2 = 14/16

(You can multiply a number by 2/2 because 2/2=1 and any number multipled by 1 stays the same, so you're not really changing the value of the fraction)

You would have to multiply 4 times 4 to get 16 so
3/4 X 4/4 = 12/16

so now you are comparing the numbers
10/16, 12/16, 9/16 and 14/16

It is easy to see now that 9/16 is the smallest diameter.

The smallest button is 9/16 in diameter.
5/8 = 10/16 (multiply top and bottom by 2)
3/4 = 12/16 (multiply top and bottom by 4)
7/8 = 14/16 (multiply top and bottom by 2)
- find a common denominator

first of all you have to make that all denominators are the same so

5/8 = 5/8 /16 10/16
3/4 = 3/4 /16 12/16
9/16 = 9/16 /16 9/16
7/8 = 7/8 /16 14/16

the smallest is 9/16
