Ah awkward silence moments , it happens frequently for me , sometimes the other person says I'll be right back only to disappear , so that is an option some use. I must say it usually only happens when contacting someone unexpectedly such as on messenger , I never know if I'm interrupting a conversation in progress or not and wish there were some way of knowing if the other party was already chatting with someone else before contacting them . I have excused myself on occasion because I feel I've caught someone off guard whom really wasn't into a chat with me at a particular moment . I think I've also been wrong on occasion and ticked some off that way which is never my intention so you pose a difficult question . My best suggestion is to excuse myself politely until I can think of something interesting to talk about without boring someone or pushing myself on them when they are not prepared .

Talk about your hairbrush(i love it). As you said, I will answer anything, im basically the same. so talking to people has never been a problem, most of the poeple I know are very shy in a social environment, Thats why they know me, because I call everything as I see it, If someone doesnt like me, F*** em, Dont bother me

Well maybe before the next phone call make up a list of things you want to ask this person about,it will help keep the convo going.
Don't read them off like you have them written down..just have them nearby to refresh your memory ever now and then about what you would like to know.
Good Luck:)

Is this conversation in person or on the phone? If it's in person, ask them what they are doing now and invite them for coffee. If that doesn't work, and they say they're busy or something, ask if they would like to exchange phone numbers, better if he or she takes yours. If they are interested they'll call.
If it's on the phone, ask about the person's job, interests, etc.
Hope this works for you!

A joke is always good. How about, "So I've been reading this book on great conversation skills" or how about, "I'm reading this book on speed reading, it's taking me forever to get through it."
