I rent a very old house and have no money for a handyman or help from landlord. Any ideas of something I do do myself to get the water to go down? Also it leaks, but I am asssuming it is because the water can't go down fast enough.

the drain is not hooked up right. make sure the hose is higher then where it goes into the drain that will help even if you have to tie it up there

Very definitely.. it is a drain problem.. If you know how to check to see if it(the connections) are correctly put on from the dishwasher unit itself TO THE DRAIN under the sink that leads to the sewer line... If you do not know how.. then.. I am afraid.. that a plumber is in order.... oh yes.. I forgot.. sometimes you have to check the drain sieve which located at the bottom of the dishwasher on the inside of the dishwasher to see if it is cleaned out.. that is the problem in 80% of the time.. Open the dishwasher door and in the bottom of the unit you will find the sieve/filter.. take it out to see if it is clean

You have a serious (maybe not that serious) drain problem. By law because you are renting your landlord is responsible for ensuring you have adequate living arrangements. Standing water in your kitchen is less than adequate. I say contact your landlord with a certified letter and if you get no reponse contact the city.
