You should be able to hook it up to the diagnostic computer to find out whats not working.

It should be a small fuse box looking thing, or atleast thats what my dakota's looks like. I cant imagine ford's would be too different.

Did you try ni the engine near the heat guard where the glove box would be on the other side. You can probably follow wires to get a better idea where it is.

That usually happens because the transfer case sensor switches are bad. Mechanics just love to sell you $600 control modules that don't fix anything though. Someone with a voltmeter who knows what they're doing can check the pushbutton switch input, control outputs and sensor inputs in about five minutes to tell what's wrong.
The sensor comes off the transfer case pretty easy. Mine had loose contacts that I fixed with a little soldering.
Can't say I know where your module is though. I had an older model where it was in front of the right rear wheel.

i couldnt tell you what it looks like, but i can tell you what numbers to look for so you know when you see it.
engineering numbers have a number similar to the actual part number, but never the same. without your vin or a number off the old one, i can only give EXAMPLES.
one such part number is 2C5Z-7E453-AF.
the engineering number will be very close and have the same BASE part number. it MAY look something like this:

2C5F-7E453-AF
OR
2C5P-7E453-ABA

as always there are exceptions, you may find nothing with this base part number or engineering number, and from there on my friend, i cannot help you.
