The Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up approximately five to seven yards behind the line of scrimmage, behind the defensive linemen. Linebackers generally set themselves before the ball is snapped by standing upright in a "two point stance" (as opposed to the defensive linemen, who put one or two hands on the ground for a "three point stance" or "four point stance" before the ball is snapped).

Behind the defensive linemen. in a 3-4 defense, there are 4 linebackers and 3 DL. in a 4-3 defense, there are 3LB and 4DL.

The name of a position is almost always a tell of where they are on the field. (eg. Linebacker backs up the line, center is in the center of the ol, wide receiver is split out wide on the play.)
