They appear to be like little barflies. If I leave a glass out with alcohol dregs they swarm round it. Sometimes I can catch and squash them but not sure how they got in and if there is something I can spray around the house to kill them off.

I had the same problem last year. It sounds like Thrips! These are small flies which live in the pots of houseplants. If you tap the side of the pot you can generally see them moving around. They are quite tricky to get rid of, there are 2 ways that I know of.
1. put the plants outside in the cold, Thrips do not like the cold and it should kill them.
2. Houseplant insecticide spray, I cannot remember the chemical which kills them, but if you look on the packaging it will include Thrips in the list of insects it is good for.
Good luck!

Make sure that the entry to the house is plugged.. around the windows, doors... and use a regular insect spray.. house fly spray.. It could be that they are attracted to fruit that is left out or any sugar on the counter top(sugar or sweetings of some sort) so you should make sure that all counter tops are cleaned all the time.

Make a fly trap out of a bottle with a conical piece of paper taped to the top. A small hole in the bottom of the cone will let flies in, but they won't be smart enough to get out. Put some beer in the bottle for bait.

I have found smaller ones that act the same and I am sure they were imported from China or Japan along with the product.

they are probably fruit flies, they have a very small lifespan, but if there is ripe fruit or stuff like that around they multiply pretty fast. Get rid of the ripe fruit, wipe up any juice or sugary stuff, and they should be gone soon

these flies might come from a nest in your loft. It is worth checking I had a similar problem and someone suggested this I am having work done between the roof and the brickwork outside and am hoping this will help.

If you have any plants in your house check them...sometimes they come from them. If so put the plants outside and the flies just go away after a bit.
