I don't think I would dye her mane and/or tail, but I would try shampoos like White and Brite and QuicSliver. They would really good for the horses body and mane and tail.

Sure you can dye a mane and tail. Have you given her a bath with joy dish soap or tide detergent with bleach in the mane and tail only (please don't get that stuff in her eyes)? It maybe a little cheaper than dyeing and dyeing is a royal pain in the butt.

Try the bath first and if you need to get horse dyes you can buy an equine magizine of some sort (just about any, really) and look for ads or google on line for horse dyes.

Good Luck and Take Care

P.S. I just wanted to add that you will need to wash more than once to see results, so be patient and be sure to comb the soap through her mane and tail before you rinse.

Before trying to bleach or dye your horse's mane, I would try some shampoo that is specifically designed for the problem that you have. You should try a product called "Wow!Whitener", it's designed specifically for the problem you mentioned as well as for removing grass stains and manure stains from horses coats and manes. You can probably find this at most big tack or feed stores, but if not, you can buy it online at "smartpakequine.com". You could also try a shampoo called "Quicsilver", I've used this before and it really does work.

It's best to try the above products before you get into trying to dye your horse's mane and tail, as that will damage the hair in the end. Good luck!

If you're just wanting to whiten the mane, try a blue/bluing shampoo or some gentle dishsoap with bleach.

As for dying the hair a completely different color, try Kool-Aid! Combine some packets of Kool-Aid in warm water, and soak the hair with the solution thoroughly. The longer you let the "dye" set, the darker the color will be. Then, rinse! Also, it's not permanent, so it will fade over a few weeks.

i actually show dairy cattle (black and white) and i have 3 "white" (gray) arabians. my secret tool for getting the "best of show" and top "showman" honors for keeping them clean:

buy some Oxi-Clean. it's not just for clothes or carpets anymore! mix it with an animal shampoo, i like to use Orvis livestock shampoo. leave the gel-like substance on for a while on the mane, tail, body (approx. 15-20 minutes). you HAVE to remember to wash every part of the animal otherwise you get itchy skin flakes off them...which IS NOT good for shows where showmanship takes it all. trust me, i've been doing this for years.

ps) you'll notice a huge change in the hair color after 1 week. take some before and after pics to make you feel really good too! it's long work, but you'll be pleased with the results.

they have shampoos that are for specific colors. I would try that before you try anything as drastic as dying your horse, Try Farnam's White n Brite.
