Actually, there IS a difference! Back when notebooks were first introduced, there were certain size and weight guidelines that would distinguish between laptop and notebook. A notebook had to be lighter and thinner so as to fit in a briefcase. Now the difference is negligible, as most laptops/notebooks conform to what the notebook guidelines WERE back then...
