Many on-line retailers do accept debit cards, though not all do.
If you're dealing with a trustworthy vendor -- Amazon.com, Sears, Wal-Mart, or any other major player -- there's little concern for safety. If dealing with an unknown vendor or a shady business (porn, etc.) it may be much more risky.
The biggest drawback to using a debit card on-line (or anywhere else for that matter) is that you do NOT get the protections under the law that apply to credit card transactions. With a credit card, if you have a problem with purchased goods or services you can charge the transaction back to the vendor if they refuse to make good on the complaint. While many banks will offer this service to their debit card customers they cannot be forced to do so under the law.
Some banks and credit card issuers offer the one-time card number service. Check with your bank to see if they offer it on your debit or credit cards.

Yes, if your debit card has a Master Card or Visa logo you can use it just like a credit card. The only difference being the money is deducted from your account directly.
As for doing it safely use reliable shopping sites like amazon.com and look for the little lock at the bottom of the browser screen - this ensures that your information is encrypted when you enter your card number.

You can use a debit card on any site that asks for a credit card as long as your debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it.
Only shop at sites that you have heard of before and you trust. Like sites that have real stores as well, like Best Buy, and the Gap. If it's a big company and there's a real store that you could also go to, then you know that the website is safe.
If it's not a site like that, then look for the "PayPal" logo. PayPal is a big, safe company that smaller companies use to process their payments from customers. If the site uses PayPal to take your card information, it is safe.

Only if it has the Visa or MasterCard logo on it.
It is safe to use on the net to shop with. The security has been improved greatly.
In 8 years I've never been robbed by using my credit card on line. Just make sure the little security logo is on the bottom of your browser before entering digits. Also get a key logger detection program if your really worried about security.

You sure can. If the web site you are shopping at has a secure server you will not get robbed. I always use Debit card and never had trouble. The best site is Amazon.com So have no fear. Use your debit just as though you use a credit card and you are fine.

You can surely shop with ATM card online. Many smaller companies will use PayPal, or other reputable systems which will safely encrypt your card data to prevent abuse. Otherwise buy from large, reputable, cos. like Target, HomeDepot, etc.which have a reputation to uphold & play by the rules. I've never been cheated yet. whenever I failed to receive merchandise or needed to return for refund. - My banks stepped in to insist to merchant that they fulfill their terms of sale promptly. I had one time ONLY, I ordered herbal tablets from India, it was by check in the mail, though, they cashed the check and never sent the stuff. since then I mistrust all Indian companies selling anything, anywhere. they are dishonorable & now I see them as dirt in the gutter.;
