I think he means just what he says. He needs space. I know this probably makes you want him more. It's because you are feeling the threat of losing him. He might still love you and just need a little space. Or he might want out. You would be a better judge of that. Give him space but, don't just sit there waiting. Go out and have fun yourself. Perhaps he needs to feel the threat of loss too. Good luck.

Communication is the process of sharing information. In a simplistic form information is sent from a sender or encoder to a receiver or decoder. In a more complex form feedback links a sender to a receiver.
If he says he wants space, it has little to do with communicating with one another. Without communication, relationship tend to fail. How else are you supposed to learn about one another if you stop communicating. Now, "absence makes the heart grow fonder" but wanting space is another thing entirely. I'd definitely communicate with him to find out specifically what it is he needs space from. :)

If everyone in the world lived by the golden rule(treat people the way you would like to be treated)(do unto others as you would like done to yourself) what a great world this would be.

No. Unless the guy is into some sort of weird "reverse psychology". It usually means exactly what is means: He wants to see you less. This isn't rocket science...j/k ;-)
