Check to make sure you don't have the XBOX, PS3, or any other version of the game instead of the PS2 version.
If that does't work you'll need to go to Game Cleaner and select Fix....that should help....if not make sure your player isn't dirty itself....
if you rented the game it's possible the person before you or the place you rented it...cleaned the game to get rid of scratches but in turn damaged the disc

Your laser might be dirty. I had to take a few ps2's apart and clean them. It's not real hard, just take out all the screws from the bottom. Unhook the parts inside to get to the laser. Be very gently cleaning the laser, I used a q-tip and some alcohol. Make sure you blow all the dust out of the inside too. My ps2's worked much better after.

trying just cleaning it with a soft terrcloth, even the back of a cotton shirt. Breath onto the surface to get a little vapor and rub a few times. Simple but helped me a couple of times

take it to a game shop and check if ur hardrive is broken and they can fix it for you for a cheap price.. or if your ps2 is broken you should try to see if you have warranty on it, just try and see first.
