a computer installed with windows xp home does not come with a dvd decoder to play your dvds. Therefore, if you try to play dvds on your computer, you will not be able to. A dvd decoder "decodes" the dvd into a format that your computer can recognize and display. a program that can do this for free, without u having to buy a dvd decoder is vlc media player. Freeware, download from this site :

it takes the data off of a movie dvd and puts it into mpeg format on a file in your computer.
