when you got married, did you decide who to take the last names? or do you just stick with your family names?

Most keep their own names. The only way you can go by one name, is for the one to go through the courts to legally change his or her last name. It is not automatically changed like a straight marriage.
PS I suppose it will be the next thing our community will fight for to be equal however I think it is a minor problem, at best.

I have heard of instances with Gay men that drop their middle name and take the last name of their mate as the middle name(with a hyphen)., IE John Smith-Jones, Gary Jones-Smith, although that isn't all that common. There are many instances in heterosexual marriage where a woman now keeps her last name. It's all really left up to the people involved.

That is a personal choice. My life partner and I just kept our names.

My educated boyfriend told me that homosexuals that get married keep their own last name.
