If you have the disk defragmenter analyze your disk, it just checks if you need to defragment. When it defragments your disk, it just rearranges the things around to make it run faster and for programs to work correctly. You should defrag about once a month.

Hi
So basically as your computer stores and deletes information it does some things that are not widely understood.
When you delete a fil what the computer does is actually remove the first letter of the file name from it's entry in the FAT (File Allocation table)
This means that the space occupied by this data can be re-used, and over time as you save something larger than that gap, some of it will go into this gap, ad some will go into the next available gap.
This over time "fragments" your files, and the computer will increasing take longer and longer to access files on your drive.
The process of defragging a drive, means that it looks at the fragments of data and tries to group all of the fragments of a file together, to make the seek and read times more efficient.
So in reality all it means to teh user, is that things should get faster.
It won't affect what you see or how you access your adat.
Hope this helps
owen

In the Disk Defragmenter, clicking the Analyze button causes the computer to check the files on your computer to see how much they are fragmented.
File become fragmented because the operating system puts data in any handy place, not necessarily always together, and when you want to use a program or view a document, etc., it runs round and gathers up all the parts from wherever it put them.
So if your files are very much fragmented, it takes longer for programs to start, for windows to display your data, and so on.
There are a lot of ways that files get fragmented - it all comes down to how much activity goes on: deleting files, moving files, copy/cut and paste, and installing and uninstalling programs.
When you click on Defragment now, the operating system goes round and gathers up the file fragments and puts them all together in a neat arrangement, and that greatly improves the performance of the computer: it runs faster and potential errors are much reduced.
Defragmenting does not delete or move the location of your data - it just straightens things up.

No the files dont get deleted. Your computer just analyzes how its going to re-arrange the data into a contineous form. De-fragmenting is re arrangement of the data on your hard disk. IF you haven't done it for a long time and you have huge data it could take several hours, but its recommended for good performance of your computer.

No, this process fragments the scattered files and tidy-up the hard disk, so that we can use the empty space properly.

All it does is rearrange the contents of the hard drive to make it perform better. It will not delete anything.
