Because society as a whole accepts a preconceived notion. Goth people are stereotyped into being devil worshipers or law-breakers, etc...Children will try so many different things trying to "find themselves" and that is normal. My advice...forget what other people think and as long as your daughter is getting good grades and not doing anything illegal or immoral, choosing an alternative style of dress is perfectly normal. No one is accepted by all and that is the truth. Love your daughter and accept her for who she is and help teach her one of the most important lessons in life...individuality and learning to be comfortable "breaking the mold". It sounds like you're doing a good job already!

Um, emo is a relatively new thing (late 80s) and is not the same as goth. If you want to learn more go to goth.net. As for people who think those things, it's probably a stereotype that they don't know any better than to believe. If she continues to be a good person they'll probably change their minds.

I have a friend who is Emo, and she's not bad at all. She doesn't slack off, and she gets straight A's! There's nothing wrong with being Emo, and she doesn't have to change her style for others to accept her.

This is the reaction your daughter wants. Be more concerned about how you feel, than how society thinks (unless you're only concern is how society may think about YOU).

people just want the others to be, to look like themselves, any different one is "bad", "weird", etc. they just need to know that everyone is different, and noone should pretend like he/she is someone else.
she should be herself!
