Like several other drugs that are now illegal, methamphetamine got off to a legitimate start. During World War II, soldiers on all sides were given the drug to help keep them in fighting form. Throughout the 1950s, doctors commonly prescribed methamphetamine as a diet pill and antidepressant, known by the brand name Methedrine.

Today, there are many slang names for it, including "ice," "crystal," "glass," "Tina," "crank," and just "meth." Though it's sometimes sold in pill form, meth mainly comes in the form of a white powder or crystals. It can be swallowed, snorted, injected, or as is becoming more common, smoked.

When it's smoked or injected, it brings on an immediate and intense euphoric rush that lasts several minutes. Taken other ways, the high comes on more gradually, producing an elevated sense of well-being, increased alertness and activity, and decreased appetite, which lasts up to 12 hours. The effects of meth are often compared to those of cocaine.

Meth works by flooding the brain with massive amounts of dopamine, a neurochemical normally released in small amounts in response to something pleasurable. It also raises blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and body temperature

You can't stop a person from using meth. It's very addictive, for some people all it takes is one time to become a addict. Yes, it's extremely hard to stop and recovery can take years. The big problem is denial, drugs users never have a problem and they can quit anytime, they just don't want to quit now.

If they admit they have a problem then you can help, otherwise and I hate to say this, there is nothing you can do.

The good, bad news is that teenagers tend to crash faster then adults, they don't have the resources and tend to go through the stages of addiction faster then an adult, but the also tend to crash harder.

If this person denies having a problem you only have two choices. 1 wait until the crash and then try to help or 2 walk away.

The hardest thing I've ever done was to walk away from my best friend when he was on drugs. His drug use was started to effect me, he lied, stole, and cheated me out of money anything to get his next fix. I couldn't stop him and he denied having a problem so I gave him a choice our friendship or the drugs. He chose the drugs, to this day I don't know if he straighten his life out or not. Something sadly you just have to walk away.

For some of the side effect see the link below.

I wish you the best of luck.

Meth is one BAD drug. The first signs might be weight loss, agitation, and mood swings. Some people can become addicted quickly, even after one or two uses. People who have used for a while start to get sores on their face and it can cause dental problems. If you think a friend is using meth you really need to tell an adult. It might seem like you are tattling, and you may even lose this friendship, but in the long run it is the best thing you can do for this person. Meth destroys people.

If they have started Meth use, you will be able to see changes happen within a few days to a few weeks. YES, there teeth and jaw will be corrupted and they will begin to get sores on their body that do not heal. Their face tends to look drawn in and their eyes will become black around the outsides....as if they had permanent bags. Meth is so freakin horrible, I can't imagine why people still continue to do it. Go to www.rotten.com and you will see some pictures in the gallery of people that were on meth that got busted and you can see their mugshots...YUK!! Oh, and unfortunately, It Is VERY hard to stop on your own once you have started without going into a rehab. or detox facility. TELL THEIR PARENTS OR FAMILY MEMBER WHAT YOU THINK AND LET THEM INVESTIGATE!!!

Look for long periods of not sleeping, hyperactivity, inability to concentrate. Sometimes the inital signs are positive... lots of energy, better grades in school, upbeat and happy. But it's usually followed by irritability, sometimes long periods of sleeping and lack of interest in things that usually brought happiness. This is a VERY dangerous drug. If you think this person is on meth contact your local police department or call a drug abuse hotline. The sooner that intervention happens the better chance of getting him away from it. Meth is very addictive.

they go through money very fast with nothing to show for it they could start stealing lying they talk and fidget alot are nervous, they don't really care about much besides getting their next fix they start to dress sloppy (they quit caring what they look like) if it is a teenager then there should be more help available and you do not need their consent to be put into drug rehab, when they are an adult then they have to admit themselves. If I were you I would get them help immediately! it is nearly impossible to quit on their own they need drug treatment inpatient not out patient treatment.

unfortunately i could tell you all the horror stories in the world and it may not help.........unless this person wants the help........you are probably fighting a losing battle pray for the person.......i think rehab would be the only way to get them off it and sometimes that doesnt work whatever you do dont let them drag you down with them.
