Do you have fungus or do you have algae? The green algae isn't harmful at all, if anything it is a good thing since it will use up the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate that's in the water. If you don't like it and the algae eaters aren't eating it then just wipe if off unless its that hard green algae, that would explain why the algae eaters aren't eating it. It acts just like the normal green algae, it's just a pain just get off, you will have to use something like a razor to get that stuff off.

If you also have fungus, then yes use a fungus medicine but make sure it's safe for all your fish.

Don't ever clean out the whole tank, it will ruin your cycle and can make the water deadly for your fish.

That is'nt algae, Algae would grow on the glass or plants, or on the other decorations around your tank. It is probably a fungus. I had the same problem with one of my fish. The Fsh has a white fluffy kind of thing growing on the fish's head, and there was a bit of red. In a week or two, the fish died. You should seperate the fish that are sick, then add a medication that you can buy at any pet store.

Algae wouldn't be causing your fish to die like that. I would add a Fungus medication after doing a 25% water change. I wold also test the water for Nitrite, Nitrate, Ammonia, and PH to see if the levels are normal... Nitrite/ammonia should be 0 Nitrate shouldn't be over 40 and PH 6.8 - 7.4.... Depending on the type of algae depends on what fish will eat it. Just because you bought an algae eater doesn't mean it will eat all types of algae.

Clean the tank and change it to another area where it does not receive too much sunlight (if this is the case). When you have it filled up, add the anti-fungus chemical treatment to it, let it circulate for at least half hour and then add the fish to it. I think that might help with your problem.

I sounds like a bacteria or even a virus infection actually. When you start over sterilize the tank with hot salt water. And maybe heat the gravel and rocks in the oven.

I'm not a big believer in adding anti-biotics in the tank because as we all know, that will create super bugs that will infect something else... including you.

and it sounds like you have a 5 gallon tank. Get a bigger tank.

You can just wipe it off with a clean new sponge.

It sould be ok, the fish eat that kind of fungas, but take a water sample to your pet store anyway, they can tell you if there is anything wrong with your water.

Also, when refreshing the water in your tank, only take out 1/2 of the water one day and refill, and 1/2 again the next day and refill.
This will ensure you dont wipe out the goodies in the water the fish need to live. :)

I trust each and every thing magicman suggested. i am going to tricky slightly extra. at the same time as he suggested weakened, he meant that the fish might want to be weakened from damage or it would want to be from poor water situations. once you do not use a siphon to sparkling your tank, and once you flow for months, topping off the water yet no siphoning, the water in the tank is going undesirable. you ought to attempt your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. you are able to purchase your human being equipment or take a water pattern to a fish shop. If any of those stages are severe, it signifies that both your tank isn't thoroughly cycled or that you're literally not doing sufficient water ameliorations to attend to the quantity of nutrition and fish you've.

If you're using a standard flourescent light in your hood, change it to a cool, blue one. The water is probably too warm and that invites algae. Clean tank, rinsing the gravels well, change filter, and either use blue light or no light other than natural sun

Actually I use this stuff called "ick away" in my aquarium. You can get it from walmart and it is like 3.00 a bottle. Just put 2 drops every 2 days in it and it will help. Also every 2 weeks use water purifying tablets (also comes in liquid) and get a clean sponge wipe out the inside.
