Myself it usually is the music the leaves the impression. I have gone years without knowing the name of a song, but I loved the tune.
But I am starting to listen more and more to the lyrics as well.
Do the lyrics catch your attention or the music?

Both...but,what is a song without lyrics.
You have to listen to get the full effect.
Not talking about instrumental pieces

As I'm sure its the same for most people, I listen to the music. I might even have a catchy song stuck in my head and still not know the lyrics - or I might even know the lyrics and still not know what the song is about!

Often, it is when a song becomes a favorite of mine that I start to really pay attention to the lyrics.

Then again, it also depends on what you're doing when you're listening to music. I've been on long car rides where I've "analyzed" every song that came on.

Great question - thanks for asking!

The music for a few reasons...

1. My hearing isn't the best, and I really have to concentrate to hear the lyrics.

2. The music sets the mood.

3. To me, music is generally a background thing. If I concentrate on the lyrics, it takes away from what I am doing.

Both, really. I like a song that has good music, but good lyrics too. i listen to the music and make sure it's good and then i want it to have good lyrics at the same time, so i can listen and listen...lol.

it's usually a tune that catches me at first, or a combination of the lyrics and the way they fit the melody. But i don't usually take in the lyrics until after i have heard the song a number of times.

Music first, the lyrics usually came later.

I tend to listen more to the lyrics if they are something I can relate to. I guess thats why I dont like most rap thats violent or puts down women. The country cheating lying drinking songs dont appeal to me either. I like all genres of music but the lyrics must say something pretty profound for me to want to buy it.
good question!!
