If he's already replaced the high beam switch there could be a wire with bare insulation somewhere.
Finding that is going to be hard for an amateur.

If he really wants to try and fix it for himself and if replacing the switch didn't fix it the first thing I would do is check for a highbeam relay. Replace that and if that doesn't fix the problem then I would replace the steering column. That would eliminate the wiring harness inside the steering column as the problem. Tracing the rest of the wires will be easier.

All cars automatically turn on the high beams if the low beams quit.
Bad bulbs or a bad low beam circuit will do it. Probably a bad connection if it's intermittent since both low beam bulbs would have to quit for the high beams to kick in.

Yea, what he said. Sounds like what is happening is the same if you just pulled back on the light stalk to flash the high beams.

That wire is shorting to ground somewhere, and energizing the relay.

terrific way is to take it to a mechanic for them to make certain it out. feels like a goofy difficulty , yet i assume it ought to exist. additionally, it ought to be from the engine warming up, so the incoming air gets warmer, which does make much less power, despite if no longer appreciably. ought to easily be the undeniable fact that there wasnt plenty power first of all :P
