"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the origanal Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

AND thats what it says, I don't know what any of it means!!
can you help me?

You have windows 2000, right?

I could give you the technical explanation but trust me, it is broken beyond repair.

Take it to the shop, or if that is not an option insert the original windows 2000 CD, start up the computer, and follow the installation instructions. But it would be far better to have a qualified engineer look at it.

"This behavior can occur if one of the following conditions is true: • A Promise Technology, Inc. ATA66 PCI controller card is installed in the computer. This issue typically occurs during the Windows 2000 installation process.
• The System hive in the registry is damaged or missing.

Windows 2000 may be unable to load the registry if it is too large. This issue can occur when a process writes too much data to the System subkey in the registry. The System subkey is designed to contain only the information that is necessary to boot the computer.

Computers that are based on Intel architecture or ARC (RISC) architecture can only use 16 megabytes (MB) of memory at this stage of the boot process. The System registry subkey has to share the 16 MB with the loader, kernel, HAL, and boot drivers. In some instances, the size of the System subkey may be 13 MB or larger.

it means that you deleted a file that is needed to turn on the computer. in order to fix this, you need to put in the original Setup CD. that should have come with your laptop. just put it in and follow the instructions. if you cannot find it, call dell support (dell.com for the toll-free #) and ask for them to send you another. good luck with that!

Try booting in safe mode (usually in boot menu). Otherwise I reckon you need to do a full restart. It really isn't that hard if you read the steps. If you need help on a certain problem just google it there is always info on what your looking for.

It means you need to reload Windows (aka re-install) at the very least. You should probably format your entirely computer after backing it up. If you've got a pal who knows computers well get their help.
