I'm in the mood to play a life sim, but i'm sure the mood will pass, so i'm not looking to pay for anything, just a nice little sim.

I don't believe there are any, usually with the amount of skill and detail required to make something like that no one would want to give it out for free. Sorry.
Or, If you're looking for something like an online RPG, try Runescape (runescape.com). It's a midevil-based game with both a free version and possibility to subscribe to a membership at about $5 monthly for 20 times more stuff :P.

Try the new Yahoo game Kudos. I tried it yesterday, its a bit like the sims in that you control life...the trail download is free though.

It is probably the biggest free download site on the web.
It is safe, and it has many, many free games, demos, and tons of other free softwares.
