depends on the artist or band. check out jack white: he can control a song with one guitar. Jose Gonzalez on heartbeats: the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Hendrix did it with only one :-)

one bass and one electric. Or you could do it the White Stripe or Yeah Yeah Yeah way, and do just one electric. But, listen to Muse, and you'll see that it doesn't take many instruments, just lots of creativity and talent.
