A light bulb exploded and brought the shade down and splinters all over the expensive dining room table. He has cleaned it up as much as he can but has found two or three long deepish scratches on it. He is in a right panic cos his parents are home tomorrow afternoon and he is worried they will kick off.

Is there any way to cover up even temporarily these scratches??

You said temporary and that is what it would be... I am assumng that the table is brown in color.. so.. at the furniture stores they sell an OLD ENGLISH polish that is brownish in color.. I have used that before to cover up the obvious. NOT the regular Old English oil but the colored oil.. The furniture stores knows exactly what i am talking about.

Do not attempt to cover up scratches on dining table. Instead, go to the business section of your telephone directory and start contacting French Polishers. Assuming the dining table has been French polished, a qualified French Polisher will bring it up looking new. This costs by the way! In any event, it seems not to be any fault of your friend. You could simply explain what happened.

wax filler then use car tee cut polish but dont overdo it because they might think its a brand new table and start looking for reasons why the table looks new ,but the kitchens a mess and the washing up not done empty beer cans in the bins ,last night pizza box uder the sofa . lets face it if only the table with damage and a plausable reason is given they will be tired and not bother to care tomorrow but watch out on Monday

They sell a little repair kit at the hardware store, it has diff color "crayons" in them and some rubbing compound. You match the crayon and fill in the scratch and polish over. I actually did it with an eyebrow pencil in a pinch but it was not a nice table it was a cheap head board ya can' see it unless you really look for hte scratch.

Buy a tube of wood filla in the sane colour as the table. Fill in the scratches, cleanup the access paste. Let it dry over night and polish.

You can try colour matching and you buy a cream from b and q what you rub on it and it dissapears as long as the scratches arent too deep. Its a polish cream. If it is only from the light bulb popping i cant see why his parents would be bothered though!!!

I should leave it and tell them the truth because if you try to cover it up you may make things worse and then they will kick off!Show them this site as well and they can see you thought about trying to cover it up and then decided to tell them the truth so should be a point in your favour, after all it was an accident.

You can purchase colouring sticks at the hardware store for this purpose, I have tried these before as I scratched my table, too. They will mask the scratch but not fill it.

If it's wood, try some polish. Be careful not to make more damage to it. Just tell the truth when parents get back
