how often are the images updated? are the areas that aren't currently very well mapped going to be? x

The updates are mainly done with new version releases. and the updates happen constantly, But i heard that it will be completed in about two years.

I've asked that question to them too. It's sort of like it's as-is, where-is. It's anybody's guess when or if they will update it. I've been using it for quite a while and the areas blocked out now are the same as the ones that were blocked out when I started using it.

It's an ongoing process. The population centers and points of interest have the best resolutions. Even tiny towns in Brazil; one that I visited in August showed up with hotels, streets, etc, and that was surprising. The corcovado (Christ statue) in Rio de Janeiro is another example.

google have said that they will redo all different countries to get a bigger resolution within the next two years so within to years you might be able to see where you wnt to see. hopes this helps!
