Both the Nationalist Chinese in Taiwan and the Communist Chinese on the mainland say there is just the one country, but each claims to be the rightful government of all of it.
The Nationalist (Taiwanese) government was recognised by the USA and UN as the government of all China until the thaw in relations of the Nixon era, when the People's Republic took over the permanent seat on the UN Security Council from the Taiwanese.
So, in short, mainland China claims Taiwan as an integral part of China; the Taiwanese government claims to represent all of China, and only foreign nations regard them as two separate countries.

No. Taiwan is a seperate country from China. However, China has wanted to "acquire" Taiwan for many, many years, but has been unable to do so without provoking a number of other countries (including the US) that have treaties with Taiwan for economic reasons. If the Chinese leadership ever thinks that the (rapidly growing) benefit of controlling Taiwan outweighs the (rapidly shrinking) cost of angering countries like the US, they'll invade in a heartbeat. And, since Taiwan is basically one large city with a token military force, China would be able to take it without much effort.
At any rate, you should know that the political scene between China and Taiwan is somewhat volatile. Do not make the mistake of, for example, saying that a Taiwanese person is Chinese. You'll have some very angry, very not-Chinese people on your hands

China's argument of "historical reasons" is nonsense. For most of history Taiwan was a backwater that no one cared enough about to claim.
When the Nationalist forces fled there after losing to the communists they weren't exactly welcomed. Estimates of up to 250,000 native Taiwanese were slaughtered by the Nationalist troops: http://jujuflop.yule.org/category/history/
"From an upper window we watched Nationalist soldiers in action in the alleys across the way. We saw Formosans bayoneted in the street without provocation. A man was robbed before our eyes - and then cut down and run through. Another ran into the street in pursuit of soldiers dragging a girl away from his house and we saw him, too, cut down.
This sickening spectacle was only the smallest sample of the slaughter then taking place throughout the city, only what could be seen from one window on the upper floor of one rather isolated house. The city was full of troops."
So I don't think the Nationalists have too much of a claim either.
The way I see it the 2 places have been separate for almost 60 years. During that time they have had different political, social, and economic systems. It truly is not our business, it must be decided by the Chinese and Taiwanese, but without threats or force on either side.
Personally, I think that with the number of Chinese in Taiwan if China could just go 10 years without upheaval or threats Taiwan might just be happy to come back. On the other hand, when they see how China has continually broken the spirit of the agreement in HK they have got to wonder how much value any promises or agreements will have once they no longer have any bargaining chips.

Well , China think ... Yes .
And most of people from Taiwan think ... No .
That why Taiwan can't be the one of UN .
Cause China say Taiwan is one of a city in China , not a Nation
And I think UN agree it .
Now , the president of Taiwan was working on this problem .
In Taiwan , we alway say Taiwan is a nation ,
it's different from China .
But most of people in the world think Taiwan is a part of China .
See from History ,
Taiwan is part of China before .
But after China and Japan have a war ,
China give Taiwan to Japan for peace .
Then after World War 2 , Japan was beaten by US
Japan said that they give free to the people of Taiwan .
But it forgot to say it wanted to reture Taiwan back to China ,
or let Taiwan to be independence from Japan .
So , does Taiwan belong to China is depend on your thount

Taiwan (Traditional Chinese: 臺 or 台灣; Simplified Chinese: 台湾; Hanyu Pinyin: Táiwān; Wade-Giles: T'ai-wan; Taiwanese: Tâi-oân) is an island in East Asia, but the term "Taiwan" is also commonly used to collectively refer to the territories governed by the state officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), which include the island of Taiwan, Lanyu (Orchid Island) and Green Island in the Pacific off the Taiwan coast, the Pescadores in the Taiwan Strait, and Kinmen and Matsu off the southeast coast of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

The answer to your question is a very complex issue. Taiwan (Formosa) was occupied by ethnic Chinese after the ousting of the Kuo Ming Tang under Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek. Chiang was supported by the very wealthy Luce, and also by Everett Dirksen, and T.V. Soong (the richest man in the world at that time). and Chiang was very corrupt, associated with the Green Gang of Mainland China and Big-Eared Tu (head of the Chinese Mafia and smuggling), and his wife became a favorite of FDR (he called her his little boy). The US was drawn into a mutual protection treaty of Taiwan and we supported Chiang with three billion dollars in aid and cash. So Chiang feeling he was so strong confronted China as an independent nation. Taiwan is a domestic situation now. When the stubborn old leaders from the Chiang regimen die off, Taiwan will return to China...every year many of the Taiwanese return to their ancestral lands especially at the lunar new year, and the door is open to Taiwanese to visit or work in China. However Taiwan and the US keep provoking the problem...there are 12 spies in detention, allegedly working for the CIA and all are US citizens born in Taiwan. Taiwan is part of China and will remain so. Many people fail to realize the strength of Chinese culture and there can be no severance of ancestoral homes and culture. Hong Kong mumbles about freedom and independence but it is a weak minority, people simply want to get on with their lives and make money. China could do great mischief to Taiwan by simply blocking agricultural imports...we import fruits, vegetables, etc. However with a relatively small population, Taiwan represents no great danger to China. In Fukien Province (across the strait from Taiwan) is a substantial Naval force as well as very sophisticated weapons...China's plans are difficult to extrapolate but my guess is that they do nothing and let the problem die off...Taiwan belongs to China. I live in China and have been here for many years.

Yes, Taiwan belongs to China because it is governed by the state officially known as the Republic of China (ROC).

i imagine Taiwan belongs to China. the in hardship-free words reason we are so fascinated in Taiwan no longer growing a member of China is the money in on hands sales and protection stress technique. income: similar mission we've with North - South Korea. Dont you imagine its better worthwhile holding those international places on the present status quo? protection stress technique: After the authentic of the chilly warfare, the Pentagon imagine-tank drew up a end that the subsequent enormous danger is China. The Pentagon got here up with a plan of containment, basically have a glance on the bases we've in Asia close to China, from the region the bases form an arc surrounding China. those bases is close sufficient to at least one yet another so that they are waiting to help one yet another in case of a nuclear or attack through chinese language forces. even as the civil warfare warfare got here about, communist vs democrats, democrats lose the warfare and the warriors & households retreated to the island referred to as taiwan. Out of mercy, Mao Zedong did not no longer invade the island and slaughter the last resistance and their respective households, and rather they both signed a peace treaty.

This is an ongoing debate. Taiwan never beat China in a war for it's Independence and the PRC has never granted Taiwan Independence from the mainland. It has been a political movement.
