Slide shows are made with Powerpoint not Word.

Writing program that does the weird formats that MS word 2003 uses?

http://openoffice.org is all that I can think of that is a program, free, that you download and run. It imports and exports all formats, and also translates between all formats!

It is also included in http://pclinuxos.com that is a live CDrom of 1900 games, programs, office suites, browsers, etc.

If you install it as a second or multiple boot OS, then, it wants about 6 Gb of space on the hard drive. Then you can have the 5500 games, programs, suites, browsers...

I think what you are talking about is Powerpoint?

It's part of Microsft office, and is used for making presentations and slide shows.

Hope this helps
