I think there's a couple reasons why these programmes are popular (in my opinion).
First, ritual humiliation of those who put their neck out - for some reason we now love to see failure in others who will put themselves out for recognition. I don't know why this is, but these programmes really get into it. Even if you look at other reality shows (like Big Brother, Celbrity Island, I'm a Celebrity...), the tasks contestants have to perform have become more and more humiliating as time goes by.

Second, the exact opposite. We love to see an underdog succeed. I agree that no one ever really built a career on these things (except Will Young - am i thinking of the right guy?), but when we aren't enjoying the humiliation of the talentless, we love to see someone who has talent, but is 'normal' become something, as it gives us all a bit more hope that we are special too.

I don't know because I never watch these "audition" shows.

Part of it is like the previous poster said - car crash TV. The early auditions are a chance to watch people make complete fools out of themselves/get their confidence and self esteem shat all over by the likes of Simon Cowell, and the British seem to enjoy that. I don't actually. Its horrible to make someone feel bad about themselves when they've had the guts to get up and sing in front of you. Id like to see Cowell do that.

Presumably the later auditions and shows - when its all people who can actually sing a bit - are popular because people like to follow the fortunes of their fave contestant, see the tears and tantrums when they are sent home etc.

My mum loves the X Factor. I never watch it because, just like Big Brother and all the other reality type shows, the sight of loads of wannabes desperate for their 15 mins of fame is rather stomach churning. I'd sooner watch shows with REAL actors and scripts etc like Doctor Who. I recently enjoyed Jane Eyre and am looking forward to Torchwood as well.

But presumably these series' cost more to make than just to stick a bunch of hopefuls in a studio in front of some "judges" and laugh at them getting their dreams dashed.

People think fame and fortune are the only way without realizing the hard work that goes behind the scene. They don't see Stage Managers running around getting people on stage, the physical training to be a dancer and so fourth from ex DSM.

i don't watch them. actually, i cannot stand the hype surrounding them: x factor and pop idol and those wannabe singing acts, those shows make for just cheap karaoke. as for big bother- sorry brother, that is a waste of time as well. i dislike reality tv anyway; how can people become famous straightaway after their 15 mins or so of fame? i agree with you, its ridiculous and besides, 9 times out of ten they hardly carve a career for themselves in the long run

If I ran a expertise tutor, i could kick out every physique who'd sing a Whitney music, despite the fact that if or no longer they have been stable or undesirable. i think of we've had adequate of those. yet I heavily doubt Whitney grew to become into thinking that as quickly as she began pursuing her dream of being a pop action picture star. of direction, you are able to continually blame somebody for something. you have an option to alter off whilst those shows are on, to boot as swap off the radio or despite the fact that device that's, whilst a singer you do unlike comes up. there are a number of radio stations that play track that should healthful your suck up, snobbish nature greater effective. to boot, you ought to purchase/acquire any track which you like and hear it. extremely of dropping time whining, you will have long previous to Amazon/Play/iTunes/different internet site and downloaded "stable" track.
