My understanding is that Kylara is forced to live the rest of her life in the prison of her own mind, with the outward appearance of having only the intelligence of a babe.

Does anyone know any more specifics about her? Like where she was left to live out her life? Who had to take care of her? Did she ever recover? Did she ever manage to suicide?

And, finally, do you think Anne Mccaffrey or her son Todd should write a book telling Kylara's entire story?

Just curious....

If I remember correctly, she lost her mind, was reduced to a babbling, drooling idiot. I don't think anything was ever said of what happened to her after that.

Kylara wasn't the one who was helped by the fire-lizards, that was Brekke, the rider whose Gold dragon was killed in the fight with Kylara's gold (please notice the use of capitalization there).

Personally, I wouldn't care to read a book about Kylara. She was a small spiteful character who, while being essential as part of the story she was in, doesn't need to be re-visited.

Hey, that's a really good question. I've read the whole of the Pern series many times, and I don't remember whatever happened to her.

I think that she was taken care of by her weir afterwards. I know she didn't go back to her family.

I really don't think that Todd McCaffrey is doing justice to the Pern series. He tends to write more militaristically than Anne ever did, and the characters are never as full as Anne made them. But I guess if the choice is between inferior writing, and no new stories at all, I'll take the inferior writing.

To Kathleen B, that is Brekke you're thinking of. Kylara was the OTHER queen rider, whose queen died that day.

Wow, it's been years. I think Kylara pretty much went insane. As I recall she was on the Southern Continent which was off-limits for a time.
I'd not be interested in her life story, as in why did she do what she did from her point of view. I'd much rather read Fandarel's story (if that's spelled right -- the big guy who invents things "efficient"). Or any number of side characters who've won my heart.
The master harper story and learning his son was the imbecile was wonderful on so many levels.

Of them all -- and I've read them all -- I'll take Menolly in Dragonsinger and Dragonsong as the best books in the entire series. I know, I know -- finding out about the ships on the Southern Continent was the big build up and the pay off was great. However, Menolly story has always touched my heart -- I re-read those two, it seems almost every year.
