if you have a regular fireplace, then the easiest way to check if it's blocked is to look up it. If you can't see the sky it's blocked. If you have a wood heater or combustion stove then just try lighting it. If the smoke stays in the fire box then the chimeny is blocked. I guess you could also get some smoke bombs to check the draught too. There is also a product that you burn in the fireplace to get rid of soot etc, but i can't remember what it's called sorry. Check your local hardware store

if you put smoke up a chimney whilst it is blocked it'll fill your sitting room with smoke. silly billy.

Just use 4 picess of crumpled up news paper.
Burns out quickly, and realy cheap.
