There are supposed to be laws that dictate how loud adverts can be, but they get round this with varying the base and other things.

You could sign the petition below or complain about specific adverts to the Advertising Standards Authority

There Should Be Some Way, Like There Is On Those Old CD Portable Systems. Was That Called ESP Or Something Where It Filtered Excessive Volume Changes So You Didn't Get Deafened If Ther Was A Loud Riff In The Middle Of Your Fave Track. On The Other Hand You Could Just Sign The Petition As Suggested By The Other Answerer.

I agree with the other replies. I always mute the sound during the adverts almost without exception.
I also channel hop during the ad breaks but find it very annoying that on Sky TV all the ad breaks seem to happen at exactly the same time.
I used to be able to rely on the shopping channels not having ads, but lately I've noticed that Price-Drop and it's sister channels have started having ads. I just can't win!
Thank goodness for the mute button. lol
As a silent protest though, I refuse to buy any item which has been advertised on TV.
Whilst writing, why do we have to have manic drumming all through the news?

The ads. are made that way though for the life of me i cant figure why. And as far as i know there is no way to avoid it. How ever there are TVs,s made that stops the add from being so loud a filter i think might be able to buy an after market version??? i just hit mute or go to another channel. Maybe i should call the station or e-mail them that the loud as hell add. sent me to an other station and if every body who doesn't like it did the same every time then you would see them disappear.

Advertising companies realize they're competing for your attention. During a commercial, they want it to be heard, and are aware there are likely tons of distractions happening in the households of people viewing the commercial. So, they make the commercial sound louder to try and get over these distractions.

The best way to discourage them from doing this? Just shut off [or mute] the TV during commercial breaks, or change to another channel that's not currently playing commercials. If their commercials are not being viewed, it forces the advertisers to rethink their strategy.

I suspect they turn up the volume so you can still hear it from the toilet. We mute or change channel in our house. They claim they don't turn up the volume, but this is disingenuous; they turn up and compress the part you can hear, and turn down the sub-bass that doesn't come through an ordinary TV speaker anyway to keep the total level the same.

Sad as it may be, I actually looked this up a while ago. They don't actually increase the volume (they can't....it's your TV and you have control). What they actually do is limit the range of sounds they use. They get rid of the high frequency and low frequency ends of the range, so what you're stuck with is a whole pile of sounds within a similar range, which makes it sound louder and more irritating.

I know that's a really dull fact, but you did ask..... :-)

Ya know, this topic comes up every time my husband and I watch TV, we both can't stand it and all we can do is fast forward, if taped or mute asap! I feel the TV stations would get more peoples attention if they turned down the volume and we would wonder what we are missing!

This annoys me as well. There really is no way to get around this except to turn down the volume during commercials, and back up again when the show starts, or to just mute it during commercials.
