In many cases, it can be induced (think of the "wet nurse," who was commonly used in the past and in some cases, still today). Also, some women who adopt choose to induce lactation to breastfeed the adopted baby. However, this is risky, as many cases result in inadequate feedings and the baby needs to be supplemented with formula. It is easier someone who has been pregnant in the past to induce. You can read a little more on induction at http://www.sahmiam.org/adopt.html.
On the other hand, if a woman is experiencing spontaneous production without trying, it may be due to certain medications or health conditions that cause a rise in the hormone, prolactin. If this is the case, she needs to consult with her doctor as soon as possible to rule out any serious concerns and potential causes.

One breast can do the job believe me I breastfeed and thought I could feed an army. The more she pumps or latches the baby on the more it will adapt to the babies needs. there are also breastmilk banks in some cities so if for some reason she can't BF. This is fairly a new thing so it may not be in your city. I don't think you can produce breastmilk without being pregnant. And NO you cant just start pumping your own breast and PRESTO! you get breastmilk. Your body has to have the preganancy hormone in it to produce milk in your milk glands. There may be a hormone that helps with that but otherwise no you cant. :)

A woman can keep producing milk long after having a child. My son was born 4 years ago. I only breast fed for about 3 months. And for about 3 years after, I could still squeeze out breast milk, just not a lot of it. Freaky, eh? But no, unless a woman has been pregnant or had a child, I don't think she can produce breast milk. If you think you are, please go see your doctor so he can do a breast cancer screen.

There are things you can do to produce milk. People we know adopted a baby and in preparation for that, they lady was given a drug to stimulate the production of milk and she used a breat pump to stimulate production.

Possibly if your body is experiencing a phantom pregnancy...you may be having other pregnancy related symptoms. It's rare I think but could be a possibility all the same.
