The fungus grows in the decomposing matter and mushrooms are like seed pods on regular plants. Mushrooms produce spores. New fungus grows from theses spores. When the conditions are right: Damp and cool weather and no too much light, mushrooms pop up and as they die spread spores.

Mushrooms are the reproductive organs of a fungus growing on decomposing organic matter under your lawn. You've probably got soil that is very high in chunks of wood or other organic material. Be happy! it means your grass will be very green and well taken care of... The mushrooms will disappear when the organic material content drops below a certain level.

If you want to get rid of them, dig up the soil around where they're growing and mix sand in it then replant new grass seed/sod.

Cool, damp, dark, and poo ... the recipe for 'shrooms.
BTW, do NOT eat them. Even experts can't always identify "good" from "bad" mushrooms. And a wrong guess can kill a feller slap daid, ma fren.
The so called "magic mushrooms" only grow in certain areas, and are almost identical in appearance to one of the most lethal varieties of toadstool. Can't tell you how many hippies have gone to the hospital (or the morgue) from eating the wrong kind.
Anyway, your question was about why they are there ... bird, dog and cat poo can all generate mushrooms, if there are spoors in the air.
Cheers.

If you have had a lot of rain, high humidity, or have overwatered your lawn-you will have mushrooms or toadstools growing in your lawn. In our area, we have had constant rain for the last couple of weeks and they are popping up in my yard also. We don't get rid of them, or eat them (don't want a visit to the emergency room!) but mulch them along with the grass and leave them as they contribute good nutrients back to your lawn.

There are mushrooms in your yard cause the spores traveled and created a new mushroom.
